I'm going to be putting together a new desktop PC for myself very soon and have been thinking of getting the MSI Neo2-LS board. Since Linux will be my primary OS, however, I will almost certainly opt for a different board if there are currently driver or compatibility issues with the Neo2.
I found a post about a problem recognizing the onboard 10/100 LAN controller here, as well as a few posts in other forums (LinuxQuestions.org, etc.) None seems to be completely resolved at the moment.
I would like to get a sense of whether these are isolated incidents or if other people using this mobo have been having problems categorically. In particular, has anyone been running Gentoo or another distro on a system w/ an MSI Neo2 motherboard without experiencing any problems?
Searches in this and other forums haven't turned up much - not sure how popular this mobo is yet, and people are (understandably) not very likely to post when everything goes smoothly.
Thanks.

infidel, I WAS running an MSI Neo2-S board (w/o onboard LAN) until my brand new WD Raptor drive died last week. Can't blame MSI for that!
It wasn't completely trouble free, but wasn't too bad. I'll be going back to it as soon as my replacement drive arrives. I had to put the IDE chipset into Legacy Mode before I could get LiveCD to boot up. The onboard sound didn't work and I didn't bother persevering with it. (I had a suitable PCI soundboard lying around so I simply disabled the onboard one).
It's not the ideal board for a Linux newbie like me, but hey I got there. I expect that Linux support for the Intel 865/875 chipsets should improve before too much longer, and I'm prepared to wait a while for the full functionality of this superb Mobo. |

Hmm...I wonder what actually necessitates this setting and what the consequences of it are, performance-wise. I've read of poor Linux support for the Promise 20378 RAID controller, but I'm not planning on setting up a RAID configuration (hence the LS version instead of the FIS2R). Though, like you, I will have one or more SATA drives.

Yeah, this doesn't worry me either - I plan on picking up an Audigy 2 card.
Other than the "legacy mode" setting and the onboard sound, it seems like you're seeing reasonably good compatibility with this board that should only improve over time. I will order parts for the system about a week and a half from today - in the interim, I hope to either become convinced or ferret out more dirt. |
