I've recently purchased Lenovo T61, awesome machine. However, it made me rly mad. Starting from high pitch noises (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_high_pitch_noises) . Now the sound is, what i could describe as sound shredding in 3d apps. I got the 2.6.25-tuxonice-r5 kernel and nvidia-drivers-173.14.09, ALSA as modules in kernel and alsa-lib-1.0.16-r1. when I play it in some music player it works fine. Also if I play simultinuosly music and 3d app it also works.
In 3d app after 1-2min it stops shredding. Have no idea what it is. Due to high pitch noises problem I tried to change some things in kernel, may it's a cause.
It used to work before.
EDIT :
No ideas ?
I'd like to move the second matter, the high pitch noises issue. It appears only on battery as it was suggested on thinkwiki. If I disable CPU Power Saving option (its propably disably C4 cpu power state, which produces such noise) there's silence, and no kernel's complaing : "Clocksource tsc is unstable". I googled it is quite normal, however I haven't found if this noise is normal and if I can have this repaired by Lenovo Service Center ?
What do you think ? _________________ ask first, #kill later... the more data you get :] |

If these issues are unique to Gentoo/Linux, then I doubt that Lenovo will help you. If the issues are consistant in Windows, then I'm sure that the warranty will cover it. I use a T60 at work and own an X41 and they have worked great with Gentoo so far. _________________ I opened Pandora's box, let the cat out of the bag and put the ball in their court.

And are you sure on my battery with CPU Power Management enabled (BIOS Option), you don't hear any noise except fan and hardrive ?
Elder people may not here these sounds, my mom and dad did not. However, for me they're quite disturbing.
And yes, it used to appear in windows too. _________________ ask first, #kill later... the more data you get :] |

Admittedly, my hearing is not as good as normal in one ear, but I had my roommate listen to mine on battery power with the power management on (slows the clock speed down, among other things), and still no high pitched noise. Since it only seems to happen with power management enabled, my guess is that the motherboard is using a PLL to play with the clock settings, which can sometimes cause buzzing (it has on other embedded systems I've worked with). If that's the case, there's nothing you can do on your end except not use the power management. It's also possible that the transformer for the display can make noise, so try changing the brightness of the display. Unlikely that this is your problem, but I've heard the transformers buzz as well on old laptops.
I would call the Lenovo support and see what they say. Or you can just wait a few years, and your then you wont be able to hear it anyway _________________ I opened Pandora's box, let the cat out of the bag and put the ball in their court.
