New rig, new HDD, no gentoo. :( Relevant specs:

SATA2 HDD: 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11
SATA2 DVD-ROM: Samsung (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151171)
MOBO: ASUS M3N78-EMH

I can boot off a CD and *shudder* run thru a WinXP installation just fine. However, when I utilize my trusted 2007.0 non-minimal gentoo LiveCD:
Code:
>> No bootable medium found. Waiting for new devices...
!! Could not find CD to boot, something else needed!
>> Loading keymaps
.
.
.
>> Determining root device...
!! The root block device is unspecified or not detected.
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell...
boot() ::

(copied from http://www.allegro.cc/forums/print-thread/596563 as it's the same error message)

Dropping to shell and scanning /dev shows zero /dev/ram* or /dev/sd* devices. No fortune wielding mknod and attempting to boot off the spawned device.

In further reading, I learned that supposedly the 2007.0 LiveCD doesn't support SATA drives. Ergo, I burned a copy of the 2008-beta2 non-minimal LiveCD and now run into this:
Code:
:: Scanning for [module]...cat: can't open '/lib/modules/2.6.24-gentoo-r5/modules.dep': No such file or directory
[module] loaded.
(repeat about 20 times)

I suspect the issue is in my configuration -- BIOS settings plus gentoo kernel params -- that's applying the hate to my SATA drives.

Ideas?

Can you boot any Linux LiveCD? If so, you might want to install Gentoo from a terminal inside that live environment.

I'm up for LiveCD recommendations that support SATA. Knoppix 5.1.1 can't detect its filesystem -- likely due to SATA issues, akin to gentoo -- and Ubuntu reads from the CD, prohibiting my cleanly unmounting it and replacing w/ the gentoo disc.

Ideas? Is it feasible for me to boot the Ubuntu demo, create a tmpfs in memory and switch the environment to that?

Many SATA buses will emulate IDE... you just need to change your SATA mode in the bios to something other than "Native", and try with each of the available options.

If the Ubuntu CD boots and detects your hardware properly (at least the harddrive and network connection), then there is no need for the Gentoo CD at all.

Just open a terminal as root, and follow the normal Gentoo installation instructions.

Your plan was so simple it worked.

It's disappointing that the 2008.0 gentoo release doesn't support SATA as cleanly as Ubuntu 8.04.1, but nonetheless I have a working gentoo installation now. \o/

Gald it is working. It might be a good idea to file a bug for this so when solved it will help others in future.
