What is the default root password for the 2007 LiveCD?

I just let the cd boot and log in auto 30 seconds.

If I recall correctly, the password is scrambled for security. You have to manually set it with passwd.

funny thing about that, I read that and when I tried it ask me for the current password. I was very dumb founded. But I find myself dumb founded a lot.

Hehe, okay, that is kinda weird.

Try manually removing the password from /etc/shadow and then resetting it with passwd. That should work.

The root password is randomised on boot.

Hopefully you need to become root to edit /etc/shadow, so that should fail. If not, please file a bug.

To become root, open a terminal window and enter the command
Code:
sudo su -

Now you may change the root password or run any command you like as root.

I had the same problem, I am using "livecd-i686-installer-2007.0.iso" all I have to do to become root is ctrl-alt-f1 after it boots and I am at a root prompt. Then I "passwd root" to change the password.

Oh, I see a mistake on my side here :)

I supposed you used the gui-less minimal install cd.

lcaseyva,

A word of advice about using the 2007.0 installer. Don't.

It installs a system that is over a year old and has a difficult upgrade path to todays Gentoo.
The upgrade is a wonderful learning opportunity though.

2008.0beta2 is a much better starting point. If you are getting the x86 version get the -r1 .ISO as the original CD ISO won't fit on a CD. The beta in its name refers to the installer only. The provided software is all from the stable tree.

farhaven,

You can use any Linux liveCD to install Gentoo. You only need some tools and a root terminal of some sort.

That works, their is a space between the su and the -

Know if the network tools would start and not just shutdown.

thanks
