hello, I need another 1 gigs to add to my var partition cause my suspend image took 2 gigs away, I wanted to take one gigs from / and add them to /var.
has I've never done this in linux, I'm gonna use knoppix but how safe is that? how can I assure that my data stays intact? _________________ Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity and I'm not sure about the former - Albert Einstein |

Instead of knoppix, I'd go for the gparted live cd, as this is the only tool I can think of that can edit and resize partition tables and move / resize the filesystems on those partitions.
The only way to assure that your data stays intact, is to make a backup first. Modifying data as in filesystems and partitions in-place is always dangerous. It may work - or something may go wrong like a power failure or a plain simple bug in a piece of software and leave you with only bits and pieces. If your data is important at all you ought to have a backup at all times anyway because any hard disk can die at any time without prior notice. |
