Is there a compiz-fusion plugin or a way to have animated desktops like Vista Ultimate does with dreamscene?

Most XScreensaver hacks can be run with -window root to appear behind all your other windows. You might be able to do something with devilspie or such to convince mplayer to do something similar.

xine -R will run your video on the root window. It works with compiz.
mplayer -rootwin is also supposed to work, but it wouldn't for me.

Doesn't that take over the desktop, hiding icons and disabling clicking on it? I suppose you can also get a similar effect by running xscreensaver in root window.

That looks a lot like using the snow plugin with an appropriate wallpaper.

I have a similar setup, using a summer-y wallpaper and the snow plugin with pollen and flower textures.

The wallpaper itself does not change, however, so it's not totally comparable to this "DreamScene".

The only animated desktops I've seen are the ones that you can use with e17 (like here). I have no idea how to use them with Compiz and other DEs, though.

There's also some talk that KDE4 will support animated backgrounds (Aaron Seigo said so), but I've yet to see such wonders.
