So I just installed Gentoo for the first time and after the install I went to install xorg. I followed this. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
But when I test it it fails. I have the Intel mobile 900 graphics. I there a way to check? Do I have to install the graphics card drivers in a certain way? Did I miss part of the installation? Also it says to list my video card in my make.conf under VIDEO_CARDS. What do I put?

The error is
Fatal server error:
AddScreenInit failed for driver 0

Any logs needed? Also how would I get them off my computer?

Have you setup agpgart in your kernel?

Sorry I don't know a lot. I don't even know what agpgart is so I'm guessing I didn't. Do I need to recompile or something?

puruse this: http://intellinuxgraphics.org/install.html
basically just go into your kernel config and make sure you have it all
if you cd /usr/src/linux, and
Code:
make menuxconfig

build in or as modules
graphics->
agpgart, agp_intel, drm, and I'm guessing drm_i915

make sure this /usr/src/linux
points to the running kernel, you probably have to rebuild, modules_install, copy it to grub, reboot etc.

Its a laptop computer. I think agp is only for the desktop version correct? Is it possible a make menuconfig will work since the first time I did the automatic genkernel?

No, you are trying to get access to the intel 915 accelerated graphics. Why do you think agp was a desktop specific hardware spec?

I'm not sure exactly what you asked. But if you used genkerenl, it is possible you only need to modprobe the correct modules as genkernel (like most auto generating kernels) tends to just build everything it can get away with as a module. Except for the comment in the link i sent you that said agpgart has to be build in since kernel 2.6.20. I don't know about the truth of that since I use nvidia-bin, and nvidia provides it's own agpgart.

you can zgrep /proc/config.gz to check also.

Yes, it is. Just cd to the /usr/src/linux directory (assuming you have made the proper symlink), and issue the command. If you would like a config to use as a pattern, try this one. Here's an xorg.conf file, as well

Blessed be!

Why does everything i read say to include the graphics card stuff as modules? I just did the * option. Can someone explain the difference? Why would I want to use a module or having something built in?

All i had to do was make menuconfig and enable agpgart under graphics options along with the i810 driver drm or dri and theres another one a may need for full support. 845 which includes 915i.

I don't understand why this wasn't automatic with genkernel. I mean the livecd new what to do right?

I don't know. I just discovered for myself a while ago that if you want something to work, install it into the kernel. There are few things (alsa, lm_sensors, fuse) where the module is the way to go. That doesn't apply to things needed before the filesystem gets mounted; such as the frame buffer, filesystem, hard disk controllers, and so on.

Blessed be!

If you always need something, eg: hard drives and video cards, then build it in.
The only things I find I need as modules are things that don't take suspending
or hibernating kindly, like modems, or sound cards, or wireless cards. Those
I sometimes load and unload; the rest stays in the kernel.
