Hi,

I managed to put Gentoo on pc with pentium D processor and il8 motherboard. The problem is that only one cpu is detected. After checking in kernel config file I found that SMP is off so I turned it on and made a kernel. But with this new kernel system doesn't want to start and I'm getting message "kernel panic".
Could anybody help me to solve this problem?

Cheers

Wojtek

I'm no expert but...

Is the new kernel the same version as your old kernel? Was enabling smp the only thing you canged? Check by running a diff on the two kernel configs if you so desire.
When does it say kernel panic? I suspect that more information will be needed to diagnose the problem.
Anyway, good luck. Hopefully someone who knows more than I do can try to help you further.

yes, the error message would be very helpful...write it out and post it here.

Blessed be!

The kernel is 2.6.25-gentoo-r6 and I have 2 versions: one without SMP - working, and the other with SMP. Booting with SMP kernel stops in various places. One of the more frequent is :
Code:
/init:/etc/initrd.scripts: line 922: syntax errorL "then" unexpected (expecting "if")
Kernel panic - not syncing: Atempted to kill init!

The other cases end up in such message:
Code:
  udevd-event[4785]: run_program:'/spin/modprobe' abnormal exit
Fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed!

- reboot didn't help
Code:
  CR2: ffff810080000000
  ---[end trace c3918df9623218c9]---      [!!]

-I've got similar like above couple of times with various numbers

Is it possible that my processor is broken and only one core works?

I don't think thats likely. And I'm fairly certain that a kernel compiled with smp would still work with a non-smp system.

Can you underclock to test?

Do both cores work in Windows or some other distribution? Tried some other OS?

Don't rule out any possibilities until they're proven not to be the problem...
