Hello!
I am thinking about replacing my ages old Athlon XP for Core2Duo based machine and I have problem choosing new motherboard on which I will be running Gentoo as I had for last 7 years:
I have this three motherboards in my mind:
ASUS P5N-D nForce750i
ASUS P5Q P45
ASUS P5E X38
I would prefer the first two because they are cheaper...
What I dont know is which one of this chipsets and onboard soundcards works best with the kernel this days...
Thanks in advance. _________________ Frank Zappa: "A mind is like a parachute. It doesn't work if it's not open." |

A P35 or P45 would be the best option, most likely. nForce chipsets are, quite frankly, pretty crap.
P35 is older and cheaper, and quite capable for most things. Unless you need say, FIS-based PM support (if you don't know what it is, you probably don't need it), which the ICH10/10R provides (I think), and the ICH9/9R doesn't.
Personally I'd advise looking at other brands, Asus haven't impressed me lately. Look into Abit (IP35 series), or Gigabyte boards. |

ISTM that if you can put this off for 8 months, the new Nehalem architecture will be worth the wait in terms of performance and future upgradeability.
Alternatively, buy your Penryn stuff at a greatly reduced price after Nehalem hits the bricks - say in 4-5 months.

"As of its current description (at Spring IDF 2008), Nehalem appears to incorporate the most significant new architectural changes to the x86 microarchitecture since the Pentium Pro debuted in 1995."
