I just upgraded opera 9.51 from 9.50 ... and it freezes all the time. I thought 9.50 was bad, but this is even worse... Anyone got an idea of what's wrong? Didn't have much probl with 9.27 ...
the 9.50 series was suppose to be fast, but is it too fast for gentoo (sorry, couldn't resist that one ...).

The browser goes into its cold state during the loading of plugins, it seems. When it's done loading/checking one plugin the web page itself gets loaded ... (not really sure if this sounds awkward or not).

| just a reminder, if you're on 64 bit, you need to add the ia32 useflag if you want the 32 bit version of opera with versions >=9.50 |

If the emerge is listing checksum errros then it's no surprise you're having problems!!
Try and fix that first; If it still doesnt work, then rar/7z/tgz up your .opera folder then delete it.
One of opera's failings is that it doesn't handle older config files as well as it could. |

... tested on a clean install (failed on a recent Sabayon-install), seems to work just fine on a clean Gentoo-install (the checksum error is still present, though, with no compiz-fusion, not that I'm trying to blame compiz for anything).

I set ia32 then did rm -rf ~/.opera;emerge -C opera;emerge opera. Opera is still locking up:

What are these plug-in numbers? They seem random. I've got a single
site loaded: http://www.keelynet.com/
I'd dump Opera for Firefox but the RSS reader in Opera works far better than
any I've found for Firefox. I've been using Opera since version 2.xx something,
why does it keep getting worse??

From my experience it is not opera it is just the interplay with flash that is getting worse every version.
The site you provide has flash and javascript ads, that is not really simple.
Have you tried a different flash program?

The ones i know of are gnash and swfdec-mozilla. I haven`t tried either because i am lazy and upgrading to the version 10 of flash solved it for me (or at least mostly). But since you are interested maybe I`ll try myself.

Tried gnash. http://www.keelynet.com locked up first try, still waiting for it to unlock so I can kill it.
Is there anything I need to change in Opera itself to use gnash? Off to do revdep-rebuild... |

Kaste: I tried the swfdec-mozilla-0.6.0 on my 64-bit system. I would say wait till 0.7.2 or later make into to portage ... |

Hi.
I had the same problem I solved it by checking the plugins.
opera 9.51 uses more then one flashplugin.
Check the plugin-options and deactivate some directories.
extras ----> setup -----> contents ----> plugin-options
click on flashplayer and then "change path"
Here you'll find all installed and different flashplayers.
You have to try out which one is the right one.
Have success.

Will do as soon as consolekit compiles ... have recently had some problems with my gentoo box ... for the moment there's no desktop, just the console. Thanks for the tips.

I've forwarded your letter to the linux people. I don't experience
these problems under Ubuntu. Let me know if you find our more about
the causes.

One thing I have found is that what you see in the GUI of Opera does *NOT* match what is
the ~/.opera/opera6.ini file.
I found this mess in opera6.ini:

So where is Opera picking up libflashplayer.so? Simply because it is finding
it in /opt/netsape/plugins? If I delete that file what is going to break (Firefox?)?
One anomaly I have noted is that opera:plugins shows two complete sets for Adobe 8.0,
with different paths in each set.

Hi.
That's strange.
Have a look where to set the prefences. There you'll find the
part and then click on the tab "advanced".
<CTRL>+>F12> should open this setup menu also.

opera uses quite a lot of small files, just like emerge... so if emerge goes slow and opera as well... i'd hit latencytop (you need to build in the kernel latencytop module and than emerge latencytop). or just look if you have high iowait via htop.
It seems as well that your plugins are running wild. Check if there are some plugins that are in your path twice.

set a java re and this problem will case to exist. |
