Hi All,

I have bought a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DQ6 as a budget server board, however I can't see support in the kernel for the AMD/ATI chipsets. Have I missed something before I go to the trouble of building the box?

Best Regards, Paul.

AFAIK even if there is no explicit support within the kernel for this chipset you should be able to set up Gentoo on this board (see [1]). I plan to get a similar board (Foxconn A79A) when available, hence some success story from your side would be nice to hear/see :) .

Hi Massimo,

I had seen this too, however the glib
Quote:
To cut to the chase, we haven't had any issues with the Gigabyte MA790FX-DS5 on Linux. Using the 2.6.22-based Ubuntu 7.10, the desktop LiveCD had worked and had no problems detecting the hard disk or any other issues. Once installed to the hard drive, we had no problems either. Granted, the 790FX is new while the SB600 southbridge has been supported under Linux for sometime. We had also tested Fedora 8 and other recent Linux 2.6.21 and later distributions with all positive results. While we hadn't any Linux compatibility problems with Intel's X38 either, this is great to see the AMD 790FX running on Linux without issues.
didn't inspire me with confidence, particularly after a quick shufti through kernel device driver options.

I have just smashed my WinXP workstation by installing (badly) a five drive icy dock enclosure to hold my mirrored drives with room for expansion (FX: Ooops!). I slipped and crushed some capacitors, and distorted some other giblets. Anyway, I now have a NVidia mirrored array and I *have* to buy an NVidia based replacement motherboard as the arrays are non-portable between manufacturers... sweet. My point being I am currently highly sensitised to chipset compatibility.

My forthcoming strategy is to use SIL 3132 based add-in cards for all of my mirrors. They are cheap, widely available and are bring out a PCI _Ex version RSN. Then I can swap with impunity.

So I might use this motherboard as the basis for my WinXP workstation as it is pretty vital to me. However, I like the board and will get another for the cheapo server I am building. I only want the Phenom as it will enable me to run KVM - and dump my last remaining Windows server.. I will be doing this alongside running OpenVZ - so I can dump another set of Linux servers :-)

I'll let you know how I get on.

Best Regards, Paul.
