I have a directory that I need to monitor.
Is there a way to 'fire an event' when a user creates a new file in a specific directory? ... behave like a database trigger, but for files on a drive.
I could probably write a script to 'ls' and compare it to the previous 'ls', and run it periodically. Before I recreate any wheel, I was wondering if there was already something for that.
Thanks in advance |

I thought that this is what FAM is for (fam_oss, from SGI, part of GNOME)...
# emerge fam-oss

Thank you for the replies.
Pythonhead, good point... I should search freshmeat and sorceforge before posting. Thanks for the link.
watersb, I found FAM is installed on my home pc. I'll confess I didn't know it was there, probably used in KDE... I'll read up and see if it is something I want to intall on a server. A quick glance shows this may be more than what I need. But, once running, I'm sure I'd find a lot of uses for it. <grin> |
