Hello Gentoo forum,

I have been using Linux for years now but I still don't have a clear understanding of certain parts of Linux, such as the configuration of window managers like KDE and Gnome.

I did a full system upgrade on Gentoo (2.6.24-gentoo-r4) and I made all of the relevant configurations as needed afterwards according to the notes from Portage after the upgrade.

But when I rebooted to reap the fruits of my labor, I was greeted with an error message during the bootup process saying xdm could not be found and the display manager could not start as a result and I was taken to the login prompt. I could, however boot into some dinky window manager by typing startx that I have never heard of, I *think* it was called twn. But it was usless to me mainly because I didn't know how to use it. I was unable to boot into a different window manager because 1) no choice was offered and 2) I didn't know what to type at the prompt.

So I emerged xdm and did a little configuring to xdm and then I could boot into the window manager of my choice once again, including KDE.

My question would be, why didn't I need xdm before the upgrade (it wasn't even installed) and after the upgrade I suddenly needed it? I'm just curious and I want to learn more about it.

Best regards,
Roy

you don't need
Code:
x11-apps/xdm
:!:

just edit ' /etc/conf.d/xdm ' to which displaymanager you want start :!:

here is my config:

Code:
# We always try and start X on a static VT. The various DMs normally default
# to using VT7. If you wish to use the xdm init script, then you should ensure
# that the VT checked is the same VT your DM wants to use. We do this check to
# ensure that you have't accidently configured something to run on the VT
# in your /etc/inittab file so that you don't get a dead keyboard.
CHECKVT=7

# What display manager do you use ?  [ xdm | gdm | kdm | kdm-3.5 | kdm-4.0 | entrance ]
# NOTE: If this is set in /etc/rc.conf, that setting will override this one.
# KDE-specific note: kdm-3.5 and kdm-4.0 are just examples. You will find all
# possible versions by looking at the directories in /usr/kde/.
DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm"

Thanks CooSee,

I did that, but only after the upgrade. I was forced to install that file after the upgrade. Before the upgrade that file didn't exist and everything still worked fine in spite of it not being there.

Best regards,
Roy
