Warning: I'm a beginning Gentoo n00b who wants a faster Linux box.

After recompiling qt:3 with "opengl" support (as requested by kdenetwork), I now receive the following response to "emerge kde":

* The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/kde-base/kdenetwo

Anyone who can tell me what this means receives my undying gratitude. If I can fix it...we'll negotiate monthly payments.

Thanks, Bob

Gentoo genrally rely's on a set of profiles to define a generic configuration that portage should utilize to build applications. I'm willing to guess that since you had to add the opengl use flag your installation is not set to the desktop profile which tends to leave out lots of important features beneficial to a linux desktop environment. if you want to install kde for example i suggest you check your system portage profile and set it to the 2008.0/desktop profile to ensure that emerge will build everything kde requires to a specification thats suitable for a desktop installation then proceed with emerge kde to install kde.

The profiles listed below may differ depending on your cpu type or gentoo architecture you chose to install.
Code:
midas ~ # eselect profile list
Available profile symlink targets:
  [1]   default-linux/amd64/2006.1
  [2]   default-linux/amd64/2006.1/desktop
  [3]   default-linux/amd64/2006.0/no-symlinks
  [4]   default-linux/amd64/2006.1/no-multilib
  [5]   default-linux/amd64/2007.0
  [6]   default-linux/amd64/2007.0/desktop
  [7]   default-linux/amd64/2007.0/no-multilib
  [8]   default-linux/amd64/2007.0/server
  [9]   hardened/amd64
  [10]  hardened/amd64/multilib
  [11]  selinux/2007.0/amd64
  [12]  selinux/2007.0/amd64/hardened
  [13]  default/linux/amd64/2008.0
  [14]  default/linux/amd64/2008.0/desktop *
  [15]  default/linux/amd64/2008.0/developer
  [16]  default/linux/amd64/2008.0/no-multilib
  [17]  default/linux/amd64/2008.0/server
  [18]  hardened/linux/amd64

To set the profile merely type
Code:
eselect profile set #

substitute the # symbol with the number representing the correct profile. Note that i've selected profile 14 for my system. If your missing the eselect command just type emerge eselect. Afterwards you should be ready to install kde. I would highly suggest reading the official kde installation howto or other gentoo official docs to familiarize yourself with what gentoo offers and how to do xyz with gentoo even installing kde or the portage introduction is never something to miss if your unfamiliar with gentoo.

I appreciate the bonus to my early retirement but i'm certain you could benefit from that case of ice cold beers after getting the hang of this :)
