Interesting. Please post the contents of your ~/.fluxbox/startup and ~/.fluxbox/slitlist files.

Now for an unrelated question. Since you have the toolbar disabled, do you use some other panel?

Code:
# fluxbox startup-script:
#
# Lines starting with a '#' are ignored.

# You can set your favourite wallpaper here if you don't want
# to do it from your style.
#
# bsetbg -f ~/pictures/wallpaper.png
#
# This sets a black background

/usr/bin/fbsetroot -solid black

# This shows the fluxbox-splash-screen
# fbsetbg -C /usr/share/fluxbox/splash.jpg

# Other examples. Check man xset for details.
#
# Turn off beeps:
# xset -b
#
# Increase the keyboard repeat-rate:
# xset r rate 195 35
#
# Your own fonts-dir:
# xset +fp /home/jan/.font
#
# Your favourite mouse cursor:
# xsetroot -cursor_name right_ptr
#
# Change your keymap:
# xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap

# Applications you want to run with fluxbox.
# MAKE SURE THAT APPS THAT KEEP RUNNING HAVE AN ''&'' AT THE END.
#
# unclutter -idle 2 &
# wmnd &
# wmsmixer -w &
# idesk &

  conky &

# And last but not least we start fluxbox.
# Because it is the last app you have to run it with ''exec'' before it.

exec /usr/bin/fluxbox
# or if you want to keep a log:
# exec /usr/bin/fluxbox -log ~/.fluxbox/log

and /slitlist is empty.

cheers

If you have nothing running in the slit, how do you know that it isn't there... ;)

If, instead, you are speaking about the system tray, then it isn't there because you have the toolbar hidden and it is part of the toolbar.

Code:
session.screen0.toolbar.alpha:  255
session.screen0.toolbar.visible:        false
session.screen0.toolbar.tools:  workspacename, prevworkspace, nextworkspace, iconbar, systemtray, prevwindow, nextwindow, clock
session.screen0.toolbar.height: 0
session.screen0.toolbar.onhead: 0
session.screen0.toolbar.widthPercent:   45
session.screen0.toolbar.autoHide:       true
session.screen0.toolbar.maxOver:        true
session.screen0.toolbar.placement:      BottomCenter
session.screen0.toolbar.onTop:  False
session.screen0.toolbar.layer:  Desktop

Mainly, the "visible" property is set to false.

You should be able to right click the desktop to get the fluxbox menu. Then take fluxbox-menu->configure->toolbar->visible to enable it. Or just exit fluxbox and directly edit your ~/.fluxbox/init file and set it to true. You may also want to turn off the "autoHide" and "maxOver" properties, if you always want it to be visible.

Edit: Toolbar and Slit are two completely different things. There is a good explanation on the fluxbox website here: http://www.fluxbox.org/features/

Edit2: You may also be interested in http://old.fluxbox.org/docbook/en/html/
