kde can't come up. hangs after clock[SOLVED]

This is a new install of gentoo, pristine. I've had all sorts of dramas getting this far. Now that I've reached login, kde can't complete. I've done this a few times before and have not seen this occur.

Xorg.conf log reports it's missing virtually all the drivers;
nv,
fbdev,
vesa,
vga,
mouse,
kbd.

Where have they all got to? They've all been there on previous installs.

Firstly, welcome back to Gentoo. Secondly, aside from the handbook, there are many supplemental documents that will help you get a working KDE:

Xorg configuration --> http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
nVidia drivers --> http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml
ATi drivers --> http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/ati-faq.xml
KDE --> http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/kde/kde-config.xml

Hope those documents help, and if you run into any specific problems, please don't hesitate to ask about them here.

kalos, I checked the documents but they still don't answer all.
I"m still missing one driver for kde, and the other for best results.
The first is /dev/fb0, the frame buffer. Employing startx, I do get the three shells at a very fine screen resolution, but it's also missing xclock. I suspect it need be installed, but what package supplies xclock? On that point, is that related to boot up taking me to editing the local time file in nano??

Also, my motherboard is a new nvidia based motherboard. It has an on board graphic 'card'.
Suse-11 tells me the driver required is nvidiafb. Ubuntu simply misses it. I've installed the nvidia drivers but this one seems to be missing from the collection. Is it available in a package in portage??

If you get xterm screens, you have basic X functionality. However, if I misread that, you would have to emerge xf86-video-fbdev. If you have X functional to this degree, then it is functional enough to run XFCE4, GNOME, KDE, or anything else you desire.

Yeah, I gave up on the TV after watching Countdown with Keith Olbermann on MSNBC. It's either cruise the forums or watch The Mummy for the buzzillionth time. While Brendan Fraser isn't bad to look at, being here is infinitely more stimulating, intellectually speaking.

pappy, yes you make a good point. I'm trying to get my gentoo up in place of watching Oprah!

I've got a new problem. I just changed a setting in the time zone file on boot up, then it hangs on caching servie dependencies. Know what's going on here my good American man?

That shouldn't cause any problems at all, but to make sure, you can go in and comment that line out or set the timezone to UTC.

emerge -av baselayout will also work, and it allows you to say no to the actual install.

Are you using the stable branch or the testing (~arch) branch? If you're using the stable branch, you aren't using baselayout-2 because it is still in testing.

That depends. Remove the # and see what happens. As far as I know, "caching service dependencies" just means that the file in question has been modified in some fashion. As to why it's causing things to choke so badly, that's really weird.

That is quite strange, but the best thing to do would be to remove the comment hash from the TIMEZONE line. If you're still having trouble, please post the exact error message you receive (or the hanging point) and a few lines before it.
