|
|
hey dudes and dudettes,
my gentoo installation is right about 3 years old and i've compiled about 80 kernels on this hardware. nothing changed. the last 6 months i've just done the usual "emerge -Duvat" world but never compiled a kernel.
2 days ago, i compiled the kernel like always. used the same modules as always. i've compared the new kernel with the old ones and there is no difference in the kernel config. i am able to boot the new kernel, but it takes about half an hour to the login prompt. the six months old kernel works fine.
just for fun i backed up the functional old kernel and recompiled it today again and i run into the same problems like with the new kernel sources. (30minutes/boot) i don't thinkt that the kernel source or my kernel configuration is the problem, because nothing changed. just don't know where to start to search the bug in my system. something changed in the last 6 month which i didn't noticed :-/
the system runs at the moment with 2.6.21-gentoo-r4
i tried linux-2.6.25-gentoo-r7 and run into the boot problem
i tried to recompile 2.6.21-gentoo-r4 an run into the boot problem
just said it, don't know where to search the bug. thx for your advices

thrashed,
Please show us hdparm -tT /dev/... for your hard drive and
hdparm /dev/...
This will show your disk data transfer rate and if DMA is being used or not. If DMA is off, please post the output of lspci, so we can help you fix your kernel.
I also notice you have a P4. Maybe its permanently in thermal throttling because the heatsink and fan is in need of a thourogh but careful clean with a stiff brush. _________________ Regards,

hey neddyseagoon
my harddrive is a raid1 array on a 3ware IDE-raid-controller. here is the hdparm output:
Code: | # hdparm -tT /dev/sda
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 1548 MB in 2.00 seconds = 774.14 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 164 MB in 3.01 seconds = 54.52 MB/sec |
the lspci stuff:
Code: | # lspci

my cputemp is at an average of 34,5°Celsius. the fans rotate normaly and the board/chassis is more or less clean
the old kernel which was compiled 6months ago ans is booted right now, works perfect for me. with the same dma settings and cpu temperature like with every other kernel which takes 30minutes to boot. i have realy no clue where to search the problem :-/ |

thrashed,
That all looks ok. The 54Mb/sec will be the head/platter data rate ... so thats as good as it gets.
DMA was an obvious thing worth checking.
Code: | emerge app-benchmarks/bootchart | and see where the time goes.
I've not used it, so I can't help set it up. _________________ Regards,
