I just upgraded from vanilla 2.6.24.7 to vanilla 2.6.25.9 so I try to re-emerge alsa-driver and it fails with:
Code:

CC [M]  /var/tmp/portage/media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.16/work/alsa-driver-1.0.16/acore/misc_driver.o
make[3]: *** [/var/tmp/portage/media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.16/work/alsa-driver-1.0.16/acore/timer.o] Error 1
make[3]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
make[2]: *** [/var/tmp/portage/media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.16/work/alsa-driver-1.0.16/acore] Error 2
make[2]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
make[1]: *** [_module_/var/tmp/portage/media-sound/alsa-driver-1.0.16/work/alsa-driver-1.0.16] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.25.9'
make: *** [compile] Error 2

 * Call stack:

 *  The die message:

I'm using alsa from portage instead of the kernel as this is on an eeepc, and from what I understand, in-kernel alsa does not work on these notebooks. I did try with the 2.6.24.7 kernel and it wouldn't work.

Anyone have an idea as to what I need to do here?

You should use the kernel's alsa driver. The driver must be built as a module. See https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-665534-start-0-postdays-0-postorder-asc-highlight-.html
