xf86config and GeForce3

xf86config doesn't have a selection for any nVidia cards, how to I set it up for my GeForce card? If I install the nVidia drivers will they appear in xf86config?

He probably added it manually like I had to do during the xf86config process. There is no preselection for your card. There is a point during the xf86config process where you will be asked to enter a string as an identifier for your card. There may be an entry there for Nvidia.

So when it first asks me if I want to look at the card database I say no. If I do that it then asks me to select how much memory my card has, I select 65536k, closest to 64.

Then it gets to the part you're talking about, but what do I put in for a GeForce 3, geforce 3 or nVidia? At that point it doesn't give me a menu to select.

Is there a list anywhere that I can look at to get my cards name?

I went here: http://www.xfree86.org/current/manindex4.html and found my card. Is this what I'm soposed to type in, just nv? I'm confused.

I just checked my /var/log/XFee86.0.log file, and I think my problem might be my monitor, the only error I could find in the log file was:

I eddited XF86Config like your's and now the command startx won't work, con fusing confusing......

I did get the nvidia drivers installed ok, is that something to do with it?

What error messages does x give? Also, what does demsg show? Again, I think that the horizontal refresh rate may be a bit high, you may want to recheck it. Can you post some specs on exactly what hardware you are using? Video card, monitor, type of mouse?

Ok, got startx to work, my bad, I re-installed and just emerged xfree, didn't # env-update && source /etc/profile. The official nVidia driver start up, nice splash screen, but I can't use my mouse (usb, havne't set it up yet) or my keyboard. I put my keyboard as a generic 104 key, but I need to do some searching for it. My monitor is a Cornerstone p1700 21", I downloaded the specs, and here is what there terminology is:

31-130 kHz horizontal scan frequency range.

50-160 Hz vertical scan frequency range.

Those were the only numbers that look remotely correct, so I put them in.

My video card is the first(before Ti series) GeForce3.

When I ctrl+alt+bksp it comes up with some pretty weird errors:

If you're getting the nVidia splash screen that means your video drivers are working fine. The next step is to configure the mouse and keyboard. If they're USB and you've got the proper USB support compiled into your kernel then you'll want to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config with the following

My keyboard is just a ps/2 so I don't know why it won't work, it has 104 keys, I would think it would work as a generic 104 key board. Or is it just that I need my mouse to work first so I can select a window to type in?

I can't find anything in the kernel for usb mice, In the 'Gentoo Linux Desktop Configuration Guide' it gives a list of things to enable in your kernel but I can find them.

I didn't get /dev/input/mice directory after I recompiled my kernel and put it in /boot after mounting it (I said all that extra stuff because usually when I don't say it it's the first question asked). after my new kernel is in place do I need to change/run anything over again?

Ok, cat /dev/input/mice woked, but somehow all that stuff broke my network, I can't connect to my switch anymore, anyone have any ideas of what might be up? After I recompile and put a new kernel in place is there anything I have to run after that? like maybe it changed the order of what was on the pci bus now I have to change somthing?

I eddited the mouse part of the /etc/X11/XF86Config file and now startx doesn't work either.

At least I'm learning a lot

Are you sure that when you recompiled the kernel you had support for your NIC selected? What exactly is wrong with the network? (as in any error messages you may get)

nope, it's in my kernel as a module just like it always was.

The first error goes by kind of fast, but it just says loading 3c59x, then failed to load, then the second error it comes up with is failed to bring up eth0, then
