gtk-engines-mist emerge fails

When emerging "gtk-themes" the ./configure script of gtk-engines-mist fails because it can't find gtk+-1.2*. Obviously this shouldn't happen because gtk-themes is supposed to install the gtk2 themes only (as opposed to =gtk-themes-1). I guess I could solve the problem by installing gtk1, but a) I really don't want gtk1 b) installing unneeded software to install unneeded things is never a good solution and c) it really should work without it.

Does anybody already have a solution for this problem? Disabling gtk1 support using the configure script doesn't work (or at least ./configure --help doesn't show anything related to gtk).
