i took out the "gnome" flag after USE=
in the make.conf file
is this bad? i took it out because i only plan on using KDE |

You dont want to just take it out since gnome libs can be dependencies of alot of software packages. You should probably instead use the -gnome USE flag. This lets your system know that you do not want to use gnome...

I think you really need to read this: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/use-howto.xml
The gnome flag will have precisely no effect on the bootstrap.

-gnome will disable specific gnome extensions for some applications, a good example would be GAIM... I though if it's compiled with gnome extensions you can get an applet or something...
