Hello,
my Gentoo haves the problem, that the startup console and all others are displaying all single white dots. something like that, but allover the screen:
. . . . . .
. . . . . .
. . . . . .

In the columns are the dots realy close together, it is not jsut a dot in the line, there are then in a column.
This makes the text near unreadable, but all the other things(X, eth0 ...), work quite well after adding the ethernet module and modding xorg.conf.
Is there any solution for that?

No, that are not keybord dots, that are maybe better called white pixels allover the screen.
And keyboard works normally all the time.

does this also happen to the grub loader screen? it could be possible you tried loading a splashimage that isn't there. if that's the case, try re-emerging grub.

cheers

I am actually compiling something big, so I can not restart, but it looks, that you are right, the link were on (hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz, but there is actually no image, just on /usr/share/grub/splash.xpm.gz , i will test it, after the compiling had finshed. Thank you.
Yeah, now it works, but I have another problem with grub:
Code:
default 0
timeout 30

#splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title=Gentoo Linux - 2008 Kernel
root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.24-gentoo-r5 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/sda3
initrd /initramfs-genkernel-x86-2.6.24-gentoo-r5

title=Gentoo Linux - My Kernel
root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.24-gentoo-r8 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/sda3
initrd /initramfs-genkernel-x86-2.6.24-gentoo-r8

My Kernel will not but, wth the message /dev/sda3 is not there (or something like that), but the Gentoo Installtion Kernel will, with the same real_root. I dont really understand this.

I experienced this too.
The point in time, which the O.P. was indicating that the messages
on the display go from "garbled" to readable was after:
Code:
Setting user font ...                                                  [ ok ]
I am seeing the same thing after using the installer on LiveCD 2008.0-r1 (x86).
How to fix this? Perhaps a kernel config in the console font area?

Thanks!
:D

Re-emerge grub. Seems the problem was that the ebuild was not copying the splash image into /boot/grub/. Now it's been fixed.

Alternatively, one could also try copying the compressed splash image file (from... hmm, where was it? /usr/share/grub) to the /boot partition, or wherever the directive in the grub.conf points. Later, this is what I did; which did not re-build and re-install everything related to grub.

Does anyone have any good links for modifying console fonts and other visual boot time stuff?

Thx
:D
