Well, I've got an ATI x1600 and since I'm a noob at Gentoo I followed some guides in gentoo wiki and the Gentoo website. But after a while I decided to try something a bit different...I think. I'm just wondering if its ok or am I missing something. here's what I did

installed the kernel using the my chipset and my DRI to module. I had to choose ati radeon of course.
Then I rebooted in it, I 've put some lines in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 like nvidia-agp, agpgart and radeon (I'm not sure if its radeon or fglrx...but in any case, DRI works), downloaded the ati drivers from there website.

Then I installed it following the instructions. just to make sure even if its too much cause I think I only had to shut down x I rebooted gentoo and my dri was enabled and everything worked correctly. glxgear reports an avg of 6k or something about that.

The only problem is the make.conf VIDEO_CARD option that I didn't even typed and the whole thing worked ? is this normal lol.

bigbangnet,

Thats fine.

If you set VIDEO_CARDS="" then the xorg emerge will pull in those video card drivers without you doing anything more.
Code:
emerge ati-drivers
is a short cut to adding fglrx to your VIDEO_CARDS then rebuilding Xorg just to get the new driver.
This works for any Xorg modular driver.
