I will start simple
| Code: | Processor: AMD Turrion X2
RAM: 3G
Disk: 120GB
Graphics: nvidia geforce 8200m
Monitor: 1200*800 unknown model |
Ok here is my problem I installed Gentoo as the second OS on my laptop. I have windows vista on sda1, boot on sda2, swap on sda3, and root on sda4. I preformed an installation using the Gentoo handbook and an AMD Gentoo 2008.0 Minimal CD/InstallCD. The install went smoothly and i set up grub to boot both OS. After setting up users etc and emerging updates i set my profile to desktop. Than i emerged xorg-x11, with VIDEO_DEVICES="nv vesa nvidia". Again everything when smoothly. I loaded the nvidia module and set it to load on boot. I ran xorgcfg to be followed by an error "cannot connect to X server". I realized that the dri module was set to load in xorg.conf. After commenting that out i tried to run X again. This time it flashed the nvidia logo and than gave me a black screen. X would not end by ctrl+alt+backspace. I read on the unofficial wiki that:

So i deleted the partitions and installed ubuntu alpha 3 (heron wouldn't work), i installed inable the nvidia driver 173 and looked at the xorg.conf but no refresh rate was supplied. Any idea's
P.S. if you want my xorg.conf file apart from copying it by hand i do not know how to get it to you
P.P.S. I am used to video card errors. My old computer had an ATI 9200SE which if anyone knows was next to impossible to get working

If you're using the nvidia-drivers module you do not want nVidia support built into the kernel (since you said you loaded nvidia module I assume yes, you emerged nvidia-drivers). If not, never mind.
I'm not positive about nVidia Riva, but your card's way newer anyway if you're talking about 173 series drivers. But definitely nvidia Framebuffer Support in Graphics support ---> Support for frame buffer devices conflicts with binary from nVidia. Try rebuilding kernel without those and then reinstall nvidia-drivers. |

Since you migrated to ubuntu, I am not sure if you are asking for support for a future installation of Gentoo, or if this post is just chat about why was it failing on Gentoo. On the later case it should be into the "off the wall" section. Let me know.

And what would these be? Besides agpart support, nothing else is needed. And as someone said above, any nvidia specific stuff in the kernel (which is only for framebuffer anyway) would conflict with the binary driver. There's absolutely no way to get both working together. |

There's some mismatch here, because your log shows how x is trying to load nvidia_drv.so, while your xorg.conf clearly configures only the vesa driver. So, you pasted the wrong xorg.conf file.
However, if the one you are using is similar, you should maybe uncomment this line:
The errors are telling you that x couldn't initialize glx, so maybe that's the problem. |

Sorry didnt realize that was my old xorg.conf i was messing around with vesa cuz that worked on my 9200se. The drivers are actually nvidia. Everything else is the same
EDIT: IT WORKED!!! thanks a million...apparently i forgot to use the eselect command when i was setting up my driver. Just another noob mistake |
