I am trying to dual boot Gentoo on my laptop that runs Arch Linux.
I am on the step of compiling my Gentoo kernel. Can I use the kernel config, that I've already setup, from Arch?
If so, how do I go about this?
Thanks |

Yes, as long as you know what you are doing.
What I'd do is to:
1-. boot arch, save your /proc/config.gz into any safe location
2.- boot into gentoo (or chroot into it)
3.- copy the config.gz file previously saved into the dir for your kernel sources, gunzip it, and rename it to .config (mind the dot in front of the name)
4.- make oldconfig
5.- make menuconfig and make sure the basic stuff you need to boot is there
And continue from there. How easy or difficult this will be depends mostly on the differences between the two involved kernels (mainly the version, as long as none of them is heavily patched). |

glenn69,
Yes and no because arch may not use the same kernel version and patch set. However you can use the arch kernel config as a starting point, if you have it.
Copy from arch /usr/src/linux/.config file and put it in the same place in gentoo.
In gentoo, Code: | cd /usr/src/linx
make oldconfig |
This process will make a legal .config for your gentoo but it may not do what you want as it will throw away options in arch that gentoo does not have and ask you to set options in gentoo that are missing in arch. Don't expect such a kernel to 'just work' _________________ Regards,
