I just compiled the kernel for my inspiron b120 manually and when I booted for the first time, this is what I got:

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(2,0)

The guide here: http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:Xwkxfl3zkFoJ:gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Dell_Inspiron_B120+gentoo+inspiron+b120+kernel&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us says that my laptop have problems with manually compiled kernels, but it's from 2006.

Is there a way for me to fix this problem or should I use genkernel instead?

Make sure you have compiled support for your filesystem (ext2/3, reiserfs, etc.), IDE (or SATA if you use it) disks in general, as well as support for your IDE (or SATA) chipset in to the kernel, not as a module. Also, be sure that grub.conf is configured properly and points to the proper disks.
