Hi.

I've switched to the unstable xorg-server-1.4 and now I get this error message from Xorg log:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log:
(EE) AIGLX error: dlsym for __driCreateNewScreen_20050727 failed (/usr/lib64/dri/r300_dri.so: undefined symbol: __driCreateNewScreen_20050727)

Consequently, no video acceleration:
glxinfo:
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual
...

Here are (what I think are) relevant packages:
  • x11-base/xorg-server-1.4.2
  • x11-base/xorg-x11-7.2
  • media-libs/mesa-7.1_rc3
  • x11-apps/mesa-progs-7.0.3
Disabling AIXGL gets rid of the message but then no hardware acceleration either. Properly but none anyways...

Any idea?

It looks like the problem is with your video card driver. Reinstall that, and probably all of your other drivers too.

I've recompiled everything that contains x11-* and *lib* (~10% of all my packages) and it didn't change anything. I'll try downgrading mesa to the stable version 7.0*.

I've got back to mesa-7.0.3 but now the framerate with glxgears is les than half it was with xorg-server-1.3 :( .
glxinfo:
name of display: :0.0
unknown chip id 0x7145, can't guess.
libGL warning: 3D driver returned no fbconfigs.
libGL error: InitDriver failed
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)
...

Reason found, I think:

Same as above. Xserver is too old.

This is what I got before I started fiddling with X packages. xorg-server version must apparently at least 1.4.99-something. I guess it's the same with xf8-video-ati...

Well, no.

Ubuntu 8.10 alpha 4 comes with the same packages (I've checked some version numbers and Ubuntu doesn't seem until now to use GIT for xorg-server) and it *does* work!

you do need a recent xorg-server (1.4.99.x) with mesa-7.1 if you want 3d to work.

I've succeeded in having this thing work with mesa-7.1_rc3, which is also on Ubuntu-8.10-alpha4 and Xorg server 1.4. OTOH freedesktop wiki mentions you need mesa-7.5 or git version to make 3D work with radeonhd.

[EDIT: The problem is I can't get it back to work :( .]
