fglrx locks up on startx if Option "NODRI" set to off

I give up. I've been trying to get X working with a Radeon X700 Pro all day using the fglrx module. If I dont disable DRI, the computer hard locks as soon as I run "startx". If I set the Option for NODRI to on, X works, but I dont have direct rendering.

I've done all the basics as described in the various ATI HowTo docs. My kernel parameters all should be correct, etc....

I'm looking for suggestions/ideas. If anyone wants me to post my .config or portions of my xorg.conf for evaluation, let me know.
