Either will work. However, the cpu usage with ext3 should be way lower, overall if you don't disable the tail packing in reiserfs.. Also, reiserfs might not be a good option if the images will be read and written lots of times, because it will fragment badly. If they are going to be read-only then that shouldn't be a problem.
On big directory schemes tuning your ext3 fs with -O dir_index might help. I'd also study the different journal models, maybe one or another is more adequate to your workload. It depends on the degree of safety that you need, and your backup policies. |

For large video files, XFS is said to outperform both ext3 and reiserfs. But for small files, ext3 would be OK.
Anyway, as i92guboj suggested, testing for your particular workload would be the definitive answer. _________________ Javier Miqueleiz

Xfs has an advantage that it comes with its own de-fragmenter, xfs_fsr. With so many files this could help reduce seeking, although, picture files aren't usually that large so I don't know how much of an effect it'll have.
But watch out for kernel bugs. I don't remember exactly which ones - I think one of the .18 kernels, and one of the .22's or .23's might have had a corruption bug. Most are safe, tho. I've been using xfs without loss several years now. As usual, keep backups to be sure. |

you probably want reiserfs. _________________ Study finds stunning lack of racial, gender, and economic diversity among middle-class white males
