Hi, I'm quite new to Gentoo (not linux, been using Ubuntu) and I've just managed to install it on the VirtualBox. I also, installed x11-server,xdm,gnome and gdm.
For a while I was able to login in and out with gdm and use Gnome. But now, when I attempt to login with gdm it appears to crash then go right back to the gdm login screen. I tested this with xdm login screen and it gave me the same result.
I don't really know whats happening, but the last thing I did was try and set a maximum resolution of a VirutalBox window to 1024x768 with the VirtualBoxManage command....even after I undid this, I still got the error. |

are you able to login on the command line without xdm or gdm?
you could look at /var/log/xdm.log or /var/log/gdm.log for a hint...

some time ago i had this problem with slim, i found no solution so i unmerged it and now i use xdm only...
i would try to unmerge gdm and emerge it again. if it doesnt work you could try to remerge the dependencies of gdm.
for a list of the deps have a look here but dont forget to use emerge --oneshot so that they are not added to your world file...

I re-emerged gdm and it appears to be working fine now........would you still like the log? I don't it it will contain the information that you want since i've now managed to login several times successfully now?...... |
