Ok, so more from the trials and tribulations of Moonpanther.
I've been trying to get sound working on my Gentoo box and have been having a little trouble with it.
While I do have some sound, it comes out scratchy and with poor quality. I've recently switched to Gnome from KDE and have been using the Alsa mixer in order to test and see what effects the sound and what doesn't. The only volume control that does anything is the Wave one, including the Master, and even with that putting it too high or too low increases the static.
Anyone know what I can do about this?

It may help if you say what sound card you have. |

Of course. That would make sense.

For the future, this was a very simple and rather stupid problem to solve. The problem was that my speakers were plugged into the wrong port. I was plugged into the Soundblaster Liver Analog/Digital Output jack when I should have been plugged into port 1 (the green one, as green is the industry standard for primary audio). The reason why I picked the port I did was because when I was trying to find sound, it was the only one that produced anything, but that's because the PCM level was muted. I went into Alsamixer and changed this and the sound comes in crystal clear and I'm able to use my surround sound system over the computer.
Sometimes the obvious answer in the correct one. If you're having sound trouble, make sure that you're plugged into the right port and that both "Master" and "PCM" are not and mute and turned up. |
