I just found this article about "Linux popularity across the globe" and it includes some insights about the use of Gentoo as a search term around the globe.

That was an interesting read. Not surprising though, from what I have seen Linux is definitely popular in Germany (lot of people from Germany on the forums as well). In India though, it is more popular in tech universities like the IIT. It has still not captured the imagination of the average user, but that is because high speed internet is not so common across India yet.
