ipw2100 issues

i have a toshiba sm30-304 and have just started to use gentoo on it, using 2.6.24-gentoo-r4.

when i try iwconfig all i get is eth0 sit0 and lo, with no wireless extensions.

please excuse the newbness.

No i didn't compile myself, the system was setup by a friend for me, to this point (Desktop/GUI).
