I have tried now on two drives - both are the same model though. I blew through an install without the guide (which I never need anyway) and the drive didn't appear to be bootable. I booted off the livecd and reinstalled grub... no luck, cleared the MBR, tried to install grub manually and with grub-install.

So I got another drive, walked through the install with the handbook and I have the same issue. I have checked everything in the BIOS and even wiped the drive clean and started over. I can put the old drive (older smaller drive) in and it boots just fine.

Anyone have any idea of what may be going wrong?

Thanks

try using grub shell to install grub by booting from a knoppix livecd an type: sudo grub
Once in the shell type : find /boot/grub/stage1
For the partition stage 1 is found on type root (hdx,x)
Then setup (hdx)

I don't see how that would be any different from using a livecd and trying to install it again. it is a single disk config, so it is hd(0,0) and (hd0)... I may try it tomorrow. I have to get to bed for now.

had a sec to complete the op... installed grub via knoppix, no issues, same results as installing from livecd, as well as no boot.

I think my issue is solved. These drives were from a raid set, I assumed zeroing out the first 100mb would wipe that out. Just by chance I looked in the raid config (as these drives were from a diff. comp and diff. raid controller) and it was reporting an incomplete set. after wiping that, all my partitions are gone. So I can assume it will boot once I reinstall. I will update tomorrow.

That did it... I have never had that problem before... it didn't come to mind to check because the controllers were different brands, but the obviously use the same 'software'. I was very surprised to see an incomplete raid set in the config screen...
