Lately I've experienced with reiser4 on dmcrypt partitions >1TB
Mounting reiser4 on such a partiion took me about 1 Minute !
using reiser4 on Partitions <1TB seems to be less time consuming ~ 10 seconds
I didn't know why there was such a big difference on larger partitions
It seems to me that mounting time exponentially raises at above 1TB ?!
so I went to ext4 with dmcrypt, although I'm a reiser4 fan from the beginning...
mounting ext4 on dmcrypt is instantly
I still use reiser4 on /
but for my newly installed data partitions I was stuck on using ext4 :/
If anyone knows why big partitions are a problem for reiser4, please tell
There is no option on reiser4 for blocksizes >4096, so thats not an option

I don't know if it's already included in the FAQ but:
Quote: | +dont_load_bitmap
+ Don't load all bitmap blocks at mount time, it is useful for
+ machines with tiny RAM and large disks. |
so that mount-option might be helpful _________________ https://github.com/kernelOfTruth/ZFS-for-SystemRescueCD/tree/ZFS-for-SysRescCD-4.9.0

Some people that had some problems had don't load bitmap enabled. Devs are currently looking if it's connected. _________________ Reiser4 Gentoo FAQ [25Dec2016] |

Maybe it's a lame question, but: how I may find out if this patch is included in the lastest sys-fs/reiser4progs from portage? It will be version bump (-r1)? Is there an easy way to include such a patch on my own? (better than moving package to local overlay, add patch to ./files directory and modify ebuild) |

Just want to throw in my experiences with R4, have been using it the past couple years but only just recently took it off all my boxes.
For me with the last couple kernels it's been buggy, buggy to the point where I have been waiting patiently, trying patches from the mailing list, mounting options, making a kernel with just R4 patches etc but it's just to loopy for me to bother anymore. If the uptime was over a day or two it would crash on shutdown (unmounting specifically). I use it on /tmp and almost like clockwork when compiling big packages with deep directories (gcc, chromium) it would leave an undeletable file in a deep folder that would need an fsck then remount to delete. For the most part the filesystem works as advertised, fast, responsive and never loses files. I always stayed with it as the r4 fsck worked very well.
I see that it is up for inclusion in the kernel in the near future. I may try it again after that but for now I rolled back to regular ReiserFS. Too bad really as linux filesystems are in a bit of a slump right now. ext4 with all its issues, btrfs with its issues, zfs being whatever, wait and see I guess.
I'm not looking for advice, I'm not going to try anything, I'm not posting to the reiserfs mailing list again, these are just my experiences. Take it on face value. |

take a look on the reiserfs or linux kernel mailing list for recent reiserfs related issues
afaik there have been some (including data loss)
might be due to removal of BKL or other recent changes in the kernel
a heads up to make some backups on other filesystems - just in case _________________ https://github.com/kernelOfTruth/ZFS-for-SystemRescueCD/tree/ZFS-for-SysRescCD-4.9.0

Is there any information from Edward, when there's a Patch for 2.6.38 available? |

Hello,
some comments from a fellow reiser4-user:
dusanc wrote: |
Q10: I've formated my / with r4 and now can't boot. What should I do?
You'll have to use a separate /boot partition (50-100MB ext2).
|
Actually it is (or at least was) possible to patch grub in order to boot from a reiser4 partition. I did this on my old box, however refrained from it in order to keep track with the updates in portage.
More information can be found here: https://reiser4.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Reiser4_Howto/GRUB

Q14: Any bugs that I should know of?
Kernels <2.6.36 should have problems with glibc 2.24 when using splice etc. it can destroy names of your data or create zero length files.
Please use >2.6.36
Same problems reported by some users with 2.6.38+KDE
|
I think you mean glib, as glibc hasn't reached this version yet |

AFAIK it doesn't work with R4+CC, but YMMV

Ask $DEITY.

We're coming to the chicken and egg problem again...
I'm starting to believe R4 will just fade away, maybe akpm could do something.... _________________ Reiser4 Gentoo FAQ [25Dec2016] |

I figured once Edward was hired by Red Hat R4 getting into the kernel would never happen and so far that seems to be what's happening. He was reviewing btrfs for them last I read.
It's too bad the politics, egos and fear of negative associations were the things that stood in it's way. _________________ #gentoo-kde on freenode |

Is there a reason why the Reiser4 patches aren't available on kernel.org anymore? |

It is almost certainly one of the repercussions of kernel.org being hacked last summer.
kernel.org has been significantly locked down. They are carefully examining every service/practice that kernel.org was providing. And in many cases, kernel.org is either substantially changing or no longer supporting previous practices. |

We have a new patch for linux kernel-3.5.3 at http://sourceforge.net/projects/reiser4/files/reiser4-for-linux-3.x/
There's some info on current bugs:
Edward wrote: | Current status
The bug in the balancing primitive INSERT_FLOW (which
led to inconsistent key ordering) is not yet fixed.
So the following features can lead to data corruption:
. tail packing in the default file plugin;
. transparent compression.
Fsck will fix everything, however, it can be rather
annoying to check production systems frequently..

Reiser4 for kernel 3.6.2 is out, you can grab it at the usual place: http://sourceforge.net/projects/reiser4/files/reiser4-for-linux-3.x/
Changelog:
Code: | Ivan Shapovalov
. i_dentry is now hlist;
. kill write_super of super_ops:
upstream commit f0cd2dbb6cf387 "vfs: kill write_super and
sync_supers". It kills ->write_super() along with its sole
user, thread sync_supers. Removed from reiser4.
. kunmap_atomic became single:
upstream commit 167885e593 "feature-removal-schedule.txt:
remove kmap_atomic(page, km_type)". The second argument was
actually unused long ago. Kill it.
. create and lookup do not take nameidata
Edward Shishkin
. fixups in cryptcompress plugin:
Fix up the main search procedure of cryptcompress plugin:
. make full-fledged tree traversal in the case when we
encountered empty right neighbor;
. unlock the left neighbor only in the case when we moved
to right.
. lock the wb-list, when calling writeback_sb_inodes;
. Capture super block when syncing fs to synchronize the
superblock with the other stuff. Make gcc happy.
Current status:
The bug which leads to key inconsistency is not yet fixed.
The update is that INSERT_FLOW carry primitive is NOT the culprit,
the problem seems to be in another place. |
