when adding text to an image I get the dialog box that lets my type the text, but no option to select the font or font size.
here the emerge info for the gimp
Code:
skippy paul # emerge -pv gimp

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N    ] dev-util/gtk-doc-1.10-r2  USE="-debug -doc -emacs" 0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] media-gfx/gimp-2.4.2  USE="alsa dbus doc gnome jpeg pdf png python svg tiff -aalib (-altivec) -curl -debug -gtkhtml -lcms -mmx -mng -smp -sse -wmf" 17,362 kB

How do i select the font and font size for the text. ?

You have to open the toolbox.
Ctrl-B will put it in the foreground.
Then click the "A" and you should get a dropdown menu to chose fonts etc.
Gerard.

Bunders link shows you the dropdown menu.
You can only get it by clicking the A in the toolbox.
Gerard.
