|
|
After installing an nVidia GeForce 6200 card into my Gentoo box, I setup X using the nVidia driver (from Portage). All was good and twm appeared, thus demonstrating a working X.
After an installation of kdebase-startkde I quit X, inserted "echo 'startkde' >> ~/.xinitrc" just as the KDE Configuration Gentoo guide instructions.
"startx" then began crashing. The pretty nVidia graphic would appear and quickly disappear as X crashed. The message that appeared was:
-----
xinit: Resource temporarity unavailable (errno 11): Cannot register with ConsoleKit: org.freedesktop.CkConnector.Error: Unable to open session: The name org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit was not provided by any .service files
waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing.
-----
Any help understanding this is most appreciated by this up and coming Gentoo user.
Thanks, Bob

looks like you have a problem with you consolekit setup. Either you need to add to it to your default runlevel or use kdm/gdm, or you are missing a session bus. |

A friend who uses Gentoo worked on my machine yesterday. (ssh is a dream. I started using it only recently and coupled it with screen so I can watch what he does, it is _so_ educational!) He fixed several config files (/etc/init.d/xdm and others) and reloaded KDE. No change. Given the situation that X worked before I installed KDE and now doesn't is very suspicious.
Re-emerging ConsoleKit has been recommended. What is "ConsoleKit"? With my previous Gentoo installation, with a working KDE, I never installed it.
Here's hoping I find a clue soon,
Thanks, Bob |
