Switch from Paludis to Portage?

How can I switch back to portage from paludis?

I think I saw that information before, but searching turned up nothing.

Can I just stop using paludis and start using portage again, or are there any special steps necessary?

you can - but it will require to change your portage configuration files, so they are consistent to your paludis ones. Sometimes your compiles will fail with a message that some file could not find some other file, which has "paludis" in it's path. You just need to check for the package owning the file (equery belongs will help) and re-emerge that package.
