I updated to X Server 1.5.0 a few days ago, and just got around to restarting X today. Unfortunately now it doesn't want to start.

From the log:
Code:
(II) intel: Driver for Intel Integrated Graphics Chipsets: i810,
        i810-dc100, i810e, i815, i830M, 845G, 852GM/855GM, 865G, 915G,
        E7221 (i915), 915GM, 945G, 945GM, 945GME, 965G, G35, 965Q, 946GZ,
        965GM, 965GME/GLE, G33, Q35, Q33,
        Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset,
Intel Integrated Graphics Device, G45/G43, Q45/Q43
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 00@00:02:0
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

this is my xorg.conf

here is the full xorg log

After the update, I did re-emerge xf86-video-i810 as well as vesa in addition to evdev keyboard mouse and synaptics.

I tried using the vesa driver which resulted in almost the same error
Code:
(II) VESA: driver for VESA chipsets: vesa
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 00@00:02:0
(WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

my graphics chip is intel 945gm and the i810 driver has always worked in the past

during that update a few other things got updated as well, mesa, libdrm, xinit, and various other X11 apps and libraries

etc-update performed a 'trivial' change in an xinit file as well

Googling so far has yielded no solutions as of yet.

Thanks for any assistance.

You should have the "intel" driver in xorg.conf and not the old "i810".

Running 'Xorg -configure' and reviewing the defaults with a new version of xorg is usually helpfull :)

Okay, thanks, I switched that, and also used a generated config from 'xorgcfg' combined into this and X now starts. However, when using my normal xfce4 desktop, the desktop begins to load, then the display gets garbled and X restarts. However blackbox and fluxbox both work fine, so i am assuming it's compiz...apparently something broke somewhere...again

thanks though

Try with a more generic config. Comment all acceleration options in the device section. Also note that AIGLX is on by default - there is no need to state that. And comment all the extensions besides composite - just to start with.

Also run 'Xorg -configure'. It will create a /root/xorg.conf.new. Make sure that the module section is the same and the device section. If you have a laptop then I suggest also assigning proper monitor sections to hw outputs. Like in my xorg which is in this bug report:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17491

Once you get it going start tweaking with the options you need/want.

Turns out it was the magnify plugin that was causing the corrupted display. I know I have a bunch of unnecessary options in xorg.conf that I've read of using, but looking at logs I see they aren't valid options.

Thanks
