When I did a search to see what CFLAGS others were using for this processor I noticed that most people were
compiling 32bit systems.
Shouldn't a 64bit system be considerably faster?
What reasons would people have for compiling a 32bit system over a 64?

Thanks in advance,
Will Bennett

Hi Will, and welcome to the Gentoo community! There used to be a few problems with 64-bit systems regarding Firefox, Adobe Flash, and some other programs. As far as I know most of them have been reconciled. It is certainly your choice to use 64-bit or 32-bit. As far as performance boosts go, I'm not sure of any particular benchmarks, but I don't think I would say that it is "considerably" faster.

I just installed amd64 on my laptop with T2370 (1,73GHz) and firefox and opera run fine. With flash. Opera's pluginwrapper sometimes hangs but opera takes care of that in like 30 seconds at most. When I'm in hurry I just kill it and there is no problem.

Go with the 64bit :) The packages are stable at the same moment nowadays. Although while browsing Porthole I've seen few (2 or 3) packages that didn't have any 64bit ebuild....

I think that you need to use nspluginwrapper : http://www.gentoo-portage.com/net-www/nspluginwrapper

For the rest, I don't know any benchmark about the difference between a 32 bits installation and a 64 bits installation.
