I have my /home directory on a hard drive (hdb1) all by itself. This worked well under Kubuntu. Under Gentoo, I chose to keep the /home directory on the root directory (hda3) and with my original home mounted as a data backup.

Despite my copying everything from hdb1 "/home" to hda1 "/home" with cp --recursive, KMail will not look into the right folders and see the pre-existing mail. Importing the mail with KMailCvt only imports the folders _below_ Inbox and their contents but not the mail in the top-level Inbox.

It should be simple to import all of my Kontact settings (KMail, KNode, KContact, etc.) directly from my original (hdb1) /home directory. What could I doing wrong?

Thanks, Bob

kde applications store their data and config files under .kde (usually a symlink to .kde3.5), I guess you did not copy that folder.

After following a friend's suggestion about the way I copy files, I was able to copy all files. The command I used was one that failed previously so _something_ was different.

It seems that Gentoo uses strong voodoo.

P.S. I may be playful but am very thankful that the people here help motivate my thought process in new directions.

by default, doing cp * will not copy files or directories that start with a dot, for example, .kde

Either do .* or doing it using the GUI will make it easier.
