|
|
Good day,
Fresh install on my old laptop.
Basically, I can't get eth0 to work. It works on the livecd, but not with the kernel I built.
From the livecd, lspcmcia gives this
Code: | livecd ~ # lspcmcia
Socket 0 Bridge: [yenta_cardbus] (bus ID: 0000:00:03.0)
Socket 1 Bridge: [yenta_cardbus] (bus ID: 0000:00:03.1)
Socket 1 Device 0: [pcnet_cs] (bus ID: 1.0) |
I figured this ment that the pcnet_cs module was required for my network card. lsmod also made me think so.
Code: | livecd ~ # lsmod | grep pcnet
pcnet_cs 45232 1
8390 17024 1 pcnet_cs
pcmcia 45100 1 pcnet_cs
pcmcia_core 45076 4 pcnet_cs,pcmcia,yenta_socket,rsrc_nonstatic
|
However, even forcing the pcnet_cs module to load does not get the network card working when I boot up the system normally.
I can't figure out what I did wrong. Any ideas? _________________ Someone asked me once if I suffered from mental illness. I told him I enjoyed every second of it.

You need to install PCMCIA support into the kernel...most likely yenta.
Blessed be!

Already done. (and yes, it's yenta) _________________ Someone asked me once if I suffered from mental illness. I told him I enjoyed every second of it. |

Here are the full output of lspci, lspcmcia and lsmod with livecd and the kernel I built (remember, this is a pcmcia network card on a laptop)

This is driving me nuts.
pcmcia bus starts, as the leds on the nic light up.
The yenta modules load and if I plug in my wireless card, I can see it with lspci. (I intend to try and get THAT to work later)
However, the pcnet_cs module, even if I load it by hand, does not appear to want to associate with the wired nic.
This is even more frustrating in that this worked fine before my HD gave out and I had to throw it in the garbage. It was refusing to so much as spin, so I did not bother to attemt to clone it when I got a new one.
Edit: I am currently installing the latest unstable gentoo_sources (2.6.26-r1). Will see if this fixes it. Curently using 2.6.25-r7 _________________ Someone asked me once if I suffered from mental illness. I told him I enjoyed every second of it. |

Have you tried compiling the driver directly into the kernel...both yenta and the driver for your nic? That might be something to try next.
Blessed be!

well, the latest driver did not help. Good idea pappy. Unfortunately, I tried that next with as much luck.
Starting to wonder if I won't just put win2k on the thing ... _________________ Someone asked me once if I suffered from mental illness. I told him I enjoyed every second of it. |

I have a similar card, using the same drivers (this wouldn't be a belkin card, would it?).
I don't use it or the old lappy I have it in much, but I remember having similar issues to this the last time I did.
Can't recall exactly what I did to get it up, but I'm pretty sure I at least needed to install sys-apps/pcmciautils to get it to work, I think it was needed to get udev to do it's thing.
Try messing around with cardctl manually, see if that does anything.
If that's of no help I can look through the drive I have the install for that lappy on (assuming I can find it) to see wtf else I did.
And for the record, I don't think you need yenta at all for this, these are 16-bit pcmcia cards, and don't seem to require any 32-bit cardbus hardware support, which is what yenta is for. _________________ "You have to invite me in" |

The card is a netgear FA411 card. I did have pcmciautils installed, as shown by the fact that I had lspcmcia.
In the end, got tired of messing with it and just installed windows 2k on it. Just wish SP4 did not fuck up my wireless card. Then I could get chrome installed on there at least. _________________ Someone asked me once if I suffered from mental illness. I told him I enjoyed every second of it. |
