Hi,

I'm suffering from a bizzare problem that unfortunatly seems to have surpassed my linux knowledge. Everytime a QT program opens a window the program (not the pc) freezes for 30-40 seconds. Needless to say this is very annoying...

Here's what I've discovered so far...

The program freezes, but doesn't use any processor time for those 30-40 seconds.

It only happens with a QT program, programs like XMMS, GTK based one and text mode programs run fine.

After the pause the QT programs run fine.

The only thing that has changed is that I've lost my internet connection, but surely this isn't the problem?

If anyone could offer any suggestions on how to debug/fix this I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advanced,
Andrew Wilkinson

Edit: Argh! I must have misclicked on the forum name, this should be in Desktop Environments, not Multimedia - if a mod could move it for me that'd be great. Sorry!

There have been other threads about qt/kde apps (don'f find them right now) starting slowly. The problem there was name resolving. So in fact it might be a problem that you lost your internet connection.
What does your /etc/hosts and etc/nss.switch look like ?
My contains:
127.0.0.1 localhost foobar.barfoo.de (fill in your hostname here)

nss.switch should contain something like this:
Code:

...
hosts:       files dns
networks:    files dns
...

It's important to have files in first position. Thus your /etc/hosts is used for name resolving first, and if unsuccesful a dns is queried.

Hurrah! You were spot on, I was missing my hostname from /etc/hosts, adding it in fixed it.

Thanks for the help,
Andrew
