This should go a long way in keeping the discussions in better order, assuming ALL kde4 users will from now on post in the appropriate thread.
Many thanks to reavertm and NeddySeagoon. _________________ Main box- AsRock x370 Gaming K4

Didn't know this was here. I normally find the KDE4 related threads by searching for KDE4 and this thread would not have shown up in that search. This post should fix that. |

Grammar nitpicks: For the last two overlays it should probably say: "This overlay is being developed and maintained by the community." Also, for the Paludis overlay you might want to make it say "not compatible with Gentoo's Portage package" Last but not least you could start with: "This is the official guide."
Feel free to disregard these suggestions, and I'm sorry to post after you asked people not to; and thank you for you effort to clarify the situation in regards to KDE 4. _________________ "We have/need art, so that we don't die of the truth." -- Friedrich Nietzsche |

Gentoo KDE guide would need updating:
- section of "Official KDE team overlay [kde-testing]" could be enhanced with something like:
Quote: | If you want to use this overlay visit this guide.
You can get support for this overlay in #gentoo-kde and help Gentoo KDE team testing it before it is moved into the official Portage tree.
|
The following should be removed:
Quote: | Support thread for official KDE team overlay is here:
TODO |
So far there is no feedback to my mail from moderators, Maybe they just can't get the things done and they're not discussing giving me rights to editing the guide either.
Thanks go to desultory for your effort. _________________ Maciek |

Update: link to updated KDE4.1 guide has changed (thx jmbsvicetto for update)
And a bit of news - Gentoo KDE herd and kdesvn-portage guys are making some steps to unify eclasses between kde-testing and kdesvn-portage overlay which may (or may not) result in merging those overlays. _________________ Maciek

Update request:
remove following line from kde-testing overlay information:
Quote: | Estimating progress for KDE 4.1 inclusion in Portage can be found here. |
Reason:
this comparison no longer makes sense as kde 4.1.2 ebuilds are already in portage (masked by package.mask until KDE 4.1.2 is officialy released) - so now we'll have Gentoo KDE4 nearly since the day 0. _________________ Maciek |

Update:
* add the following to kde-testing section, just below "You can get support ...":
Quote: | Please visit this thread before asking developers - you may find your answer here as well. |
reason:
thread kdesvn-portage has been renamed "kde-testing and kdesvn-portage overlays thread" and it now holds support for both overlays
* add the following FAQ just under those 4 sections (before "Stuck by NeddySeagoon " ;) )
Quote: | KDE 4.1 in Portage - FAQ
Q: When KDE 4.1 will be in Portage?
A: KDE-4.1.2 is already in Portage now but it's masked due to conflicts with existing KDE3 installations. The team is already working to solve that issue. If your are brave enough, you can unmask placing this file in your /etc/portage/package.unmask. Remember that you are unmasking KDE-4.1.2 at your own risk.
Q: Why there are no sets for KDE 4.1?
A: KDE-4.1.2 so far is NOT making use of sets but sets are expected to arrive in near future - the reason is - the naming convention for sets is not yet established. Although KDE4 Gentoo team prepared some sets for you here (click 'raw' to download file and place in /etc/portage/sets/). Remember that you are using them at your own risk.
Q: When I start KDE 3, Plasma is being executed and my KDE 3 applications are either crashing or just not working, what's going on?
A: This is the conflict mentioned earlier. There is a fix - test it please and report any further issues with KDE 3 applications here or directly on IRC channel.
Code: | # emerge --sync
# emerge -av1 kde-base/kdebase-startkde:3.5 kde-base/kdebase-startkde:4.1
# env-update && source /etc/profile

Proposed changes:
change:
- remove 1st (and possibly 3rd) question from FAQ below
reason:
- they are already obsolete as KDE-4.1 is in portage unmasked
change:
- just after FAQ add the following:
Quote: | If you have any suggestions for improvements regarding this guide, feel free to post them here. |
reason:
- so far I'm the only person suggesting anything, maybe nobody knows where to add suggestions - on the other hand there should be some discussion (maybe internal but with some feedback here) among admins/mods before adding any change - so that we have the most politically correct guide as a result etc
change:
- remove following line from kde-testing section Quote: | If you want to use this overlay visit this guide. |
reason:
- linked web-page no longer contains kde-testing guide (it became official KDE4 portage guide) _________________ Maciek |

well.. suggestion has not been applied 100% correctly - link is missing:
there is:
Quote: | If you have any suggestions for improvements regarding this guide, feel free to post them here. |
should be (see 'edit/quote' to see the code) :
Quote: | If you have any suggestions for improvements regarding this guide, feel free to post them here. |
And question - is there any hope for adding spoilers feature? (like in vBulletin)
Changelog could be spoiled in guide as it's constantly growing and soon it will be longer than the contents itself. _________________ Maciek |

hey there !
I'm just dropping a note regarding the way you ship the kde-4.1 sets. I found the gitweb interface painful to use, using hashed names preventing mass downloading. Perhaps preparing a little tarball with all the sets would be easier to setup for users that are just interested by using "emerge @kdebase".
Great job by the way, works like a charm. |

Well - KDE4 sets are going to enter portage in near future (what does it mean 'near', it's question for developers).
Regarding gitweb interface being painfull - users who want to install KDE4 gentoo way are adviced (no matter what is mentioned in FAQ we're discussing here) to visit KDE 4 guide - that being said - KDE4 in portage is not that intended for "everyone" (out of the box) as it needs unkeywording at least.
One can grab whole sets directory from gitweb as well - on top of the page there is "snapshot" and links on the right - with archives you propose - being prepared on the fly.
Anyway, some updates won't hurt:
Requested updates:
- in FAQ section, change
Quote: | prepared some sets for you here (click 'raw' to download file and place in /etc/portage/sets/). Remember that you are using them at your own risk. |
to
Quote: | prepared some sets for you here (click 'raw' to download file and place in /etc/portage/sets/). An archive with all sets can be downloaded from here. Remember that you are using them at your own risk. |
- in kdesvn-portage section replace: (whole section)
Quote: | This overlay is being developed and maintained by the community. It contains tagged packages as well as SVN ebuilds, it follows the 4.2 development branch. If you want to use this overlay - consult this Wiki.
Support thread for unofficial Portage-compatible overlay is here:

with
Quote: | This overlay is being removed and Live KDE ebuilds from this overlay are being merged to kde-testing overlay.
If you are using KDE 4 from this overlay, you are advised to switch to KDE 4 from Portage repository. |
edit: this one is applied already _________________ Maciek

Q: When I start KDE 3, Plasma is being executed and my KDE 3 applications are either crashing or just not working. Konqueror refuses to start, complaining about default stylesheet version mismatch. What's going on?
A: This is the conflict related to mixed KDE3/KDE4 sessions. To fix this issue you need to upgrade your existing KDE 3.5.x installations to 3.5.10 or newer.
Q: I installed KDE4, I can start my desktop using startx but KDM is not working. Please help.
A: First, ensure that kdm executable is in your PATH. To check that, run:
If it's not found, then probably your environment is not up to date. To update it, run:
Code: | env-update && source /etc/profile |
When kdm is found, set DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm" variable in /etc/conf.d/xdm. From now on, KDM should be working.
Q: I just found this neat KDE4 application, can you make an ebuild for it?
A: In short, no. To be more precise, it is possible but it would be better if you created ebuild for it and send it Gentoo KDE team for review - it's more likely it will be added to overlay. The best procedure would be to create bug with ebuild proposal (if it's not there already) and inform the developers on #gentoo-kde about it:
