NetworkManager crashes if used in KDE network panel

Strange little problem. I tried out today NetworkManager to see if it works with the flacky wifi we have in this building. The connection worked but I missed any kind of profiles. This is going to be tricky since at home I have a particular setup ( unencrypted wifi with OpenSwan ) so I have to use different wifi settings. So I tried to go to the KDE network configuration panel. For some reason when I go in there the panel shows but NetworkManager seems to crash in the background. There are no logs in dmesg or any other place. Using the NetworkManager in no-daemon mode helps nothing too since then I can not connect anymore to the wifi.

Any ideas what could be the problem? Any chances of getting profiles done in NetworkManager? What about OpenSwan/IPSec support?
