|
|
After several years of my raid1 array running perfectly fine, I noticed today that one of the partitions was removed from one of the arrays:
Code: | # cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid1]
md1 : active raid1 sdb1[1] sda1[0]
48128 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md2 : active raid1 sdb2[1] sda2[0]
4096448 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md3 : active raid1 sda3[0]
308423808 blocks [2/1] [U_]

So, sdb3 mysteriously dissapeared from md3. I am sure no one else has access to remove it, and I certainly didn't.
What does this mean? From what I've read, if the drive failed, it would not have just disappeared, and you would think all of the sdb* drives would have failed as well, right?
I've since added the drive back to the array, and it is rebuilding now. I'm just wondering if there really is something wrong and I should replace the drive?
Also, I found no error messages in /var/log/messages until I started the rebuild.

I remember creating a Raid 1 array once, and then finding shortly after that the disk had dropped out. I added it back in and it was OK again after that. Nothing showed in logs either for explanation for it.
Once it's rebuilt keep an eye on logs, and also /proc/mdstat also. Is the sending of email working on the box? Normally in /etc/mdadm.conf there is a line for who to email notifications to in the event of a failure. Normally mine was set to root@localhost but then I never had mail configured and thus never received any notifications either.
One more, you could install smartmontools and then monitor your disks with this. Again for notification it's via email, but you can run it from the command line or within webmin and see if it notices any potential problems. _________________ Ian Walker
