gnome panels not staying removed

I'm running compiz on a dual head machine and so I want the gnome panels gone and I'm using awn. My problem is that everytime i login to gnome the default top and bottom panels are always there. I remove them each time but they keep returning. I'm assuming its a permissions issue but I'm not sure where to start digging into logs and whatnot

If you don't mind changing your settings again, you can try removing/renaming the .gnome2 dir in your home folder.
