I installed Gentoo on a friend's computer.
At first eth0 worked fine, but
then I recompiled the kernel again
to add SCSI support, Button support
and other things. But after that I
couldn't bring up eth0. And I didn't
save the old .config file. I did
save the old kernel, so I can
still get on the net with it,
but I can't compile anything new into
it because I'm not sure where I
went wrong. I tried starting from
scratch and even taking the working
.config file from my machine, but
neither worked. I'm just wondering if
anyone else has had this problem?
Here's the specs on the Card:

SiS 900 using the sis900.o mod

cant help you with the new kernel, but if you are lucky (read: CONFIG_PROC_CONFIG=y in the old kernel config)
you will find the config in /proc/config - maybe you can start again from there

just enable [*] his card or enable it as module [M] and than isnmod the module.
does he have a dhcp?
did you taked a look at /etc/conf.d/net ? :-|

did you did /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
is net.eth0 on you default boot level?

it is enabled as module, and my network can do dhcp or static, neither of which work. the card and module work, with the old kernel. but whenver I recompile, it won't bring up the interface, for dhcp or static. but when I change back to the old kernel, it works like a charm. It must be something in the kernel config that is amiss, and I can't find it.
