| I have an X300 and am using the open source drivers. Everything is faster now with a compositing manager running than it was back when I first got the laptop almost 3 years ago without a compositing manager running. 3d support is decent, but not great. 2d support is excellent and very snappy. EXA works well. |

there will be very good 3D-enabled drivers for Radeon HD series GPUs, although this will take a few more months. meanwhile, the proprietary drivers for AMD GPUs are "good enough" already.
however, nvidia's proprietary drivers are still better than amd's. but then again, there is simply no momentum in their open source drivers.

Opensource? What is the reason to assume them to be "very good"?
My question is quite simple now: should I worry about if I buy MOBO with SLI or CrossFire support (just in case..)? |

Opensource 3D support is already available and working well for r5xx series RadeonHD, and r6xx support should be arriving soon. |

I have always been really satisfied with nvidia cards and nvidia's drivers. I am using nvidia driver 177.67. my driver is, according to nvidia, a beta driver, but I think all CUDA enabled drivers are beta drivers. nvidia x-server setup utility is very strait forward and nice for adjustments as well. all in all a great experience. The nvidia license taints the kernel gpl-ness but I couldn't care less.
this works only with an x86 or x86_64 arch of course. |

Nvidia is the way to go.
I got compiz working easily with nvidia while it was an unstable nightmare with ATI.

| Then I do this: buy some geforce now and, if that is too little, radeon with crossfire some months ahead! (in a hope for good, opensource drivers) |

Still having questions: is it possible to manually turn off video card (geforce or radeon), so it doesn't suck power for nothing?
We are talking about some 50W idle.... |
