|
|
I currently have a dual boot system xp===>gentoo which works fine. The only reason I keep using xp is for software such as Quickbooks; Office & games here and there. I would like to set up a vmware in gentoo to be able to run xp from within gentoo. I know that I can use wine to run some windows apps, however I havent been lucky when setting up wine. Also, the apps I need, Quickbooks 2007 are not fully supported by wine so I think running a vmware station within gentoo may be the solution im looking for. Can anyone suggest a specific vmware ebuild and any tips on how to go about setting this up? Thanks in advance. _________________ Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P Motherboard

If you plan on playing games on the VM then you'll be severaly dissapointed. You won't get any 3d acceleration so most games won't even run. |

szczerb,
To be honest, games are an after thought. My main purpose is to be able to use Quickbooks, MSOffice & other software. The only reason I keep loggin back into xp is to run these apps. _________________ Gigabyte MA790X-UD4P Motherboard

Hi there.
Since vmware workstation isn't freeware I'ld go for vmware server. Having not used gentoo for somethime (but coming back) I'm guessing they're in portage.
Once installed vmware server. You can make a new VM. This can be a blank one (the safest) or on from an existing partion. This option I've done before but doesn't always work. With a blank VM you can also restore an image from your windows partion. Then you needn't reinstall erverything. Windows usually will update the drivers for you.
The difference with vmware workstation and vmware server is mainly the snapshot manager. With vmware server you can only make one snapshot. With vmware workstation you can make as many as you want and continue from any of them. |

snakeo2,
vmware-server is free and just works. However, its not yet compatible with kernels >2.6.25 _________________ Regards,
